5.1 Installation and Setup

Are you wondering how to install and set up DaVinci Resolve 18? If yes, follow the step-by-step guide to install the software on your system. I am using MacBook while explaining the installation setup. But for Window users, most of the steps are the same, wherever need special step, I will also do that too:

  • Open BlackMagic Design on your System (Mac/Windows)

  • Click on “Products” from the top menu. And, under products, click on “DaVinci Resolve and Fusion Software.”

  • Now, if you want a free version, click on “Davinci Resolve Free.”

  • Now, click on the “Free Download Now.”

  • Click on the “Windows/Mac OS/Linus” button below the required version. I clicked on MacOS for “DaVinci Resolve 18 Public Beta”.

  • Fill in the desired details like your name, place, and email. After filling in the details, click on “Register & Download.”

  • A zip file will be downloaded to your system.

  • Extract the downloaded zip file by double click on it.

  • Click on “Continue” to the DaVinci Resolve Setup Wizard.” Click on “Install.”

  • Read and then Accept the license agreement. The installation will start. Then you will get the below screen:

5.2 Editing Interface

Whether you use DaVinci Resolve 18 on a Mac, Windows, or Linux, this training guide will teach you how to take a project from its initial setup to its final output. You’ll become familiar with the standard menus and buttons, as well as essential editing, effects, color correction, and audio sweetening workflows

Main Interface

There are seven panels of the main interface of DaVinci Resolve 18. It has different stages of File, Trim, Edit, Fusion, Clip, Mark, Playback, Color, Fairlight, and Deliver.

Start a new project

  • First, when you open the DaVinci Resolve 18, you will land on the new project page. This is a project manager page where you start a new project or can make edits to an already saved project.

  • You can start the new project by double-clicking on the “Untitled Project” or by clicking “New Project” at the bottom right.

Import media to edit

  • When you select a new project, you will land to a media page. DaVinci Resolve’s Media panel has a media browser, media pool, material monitor, and material data at the bottom.
  • Select the media pool by clicking on the second icon from the bottom menu.

  • Now, you can add your video clip or photo to the media pool using media storage. Or, you can directly upload the file from the media browser.

  • The media storage will show all the files and storage sites of your system to choose the file for editing. Also need to change the frame rate of the project after the imported material.

  • There are Libraries, Applications, Audio, and many more option in media storage to choose from.

  • After selecting the media, I can see all the clip details in the right side of the page. It displays everything, including the end frame, bit depth, data level, frames, etc.

Add the media to timeline

  • After importing the material, you can edit the video. For this, drag it into the timeline for piecing and assembling.

  • The timeline is divided into tracks and can be split into audio and video.
  • In editing, there are two modes trim editing mode and dynamic editing mode.

Adding effects and transitions to clip

  • Effects can add interest and story to your video if used properly. Click on the “effects” tab at the top to open it.

  • There are video transitions, audio transitions, titles, generators, effects, and filters in Davinci Resolve 18.
  • Davinci Resolve has around 40 video transitions. There are 6 dissolve transitions, 9 iris transitions, 4 motion transitions, more than 20 fusion transitions, and many more.

Adding titles and texts

Davinci Resolve 18 has more than 40 titles, styles, and options to choose from. Here you also set the font, size, color, line spacing, font case, alignment, and position of your text.

Setting the colors or background

  • There is the color tab at the bottom with which you can set the color of your video.

  • To set the colors, there are HDR color wheels, primaries color wheels, RGB mixer, qualifier, and more.
  • OpenFX is a special effects library for color matching. Here you can polish your video, darken it, remove haze, change the color space, blur it, etc.

  • Click the Color Control at the top to match the colors between different shots.
  • Many functions like grade version, append node graph, resolve live, auto color, etc., have been added to DaVinci Resolve 18 color management to improve the image quality.

Adding music and sound effects

  • With Davinci Resolve 18, you can add audio tracks to your videos. And, if the clip you are using has audio already, it will show at the bottom of the timeline.

  • To add music to your video or sound effects, drag and drop the audio clip onto an audio track below the video.
  • There are audio transitions that you can use. Further, you can edit the length, sharpness, and loudness of the audio.
  • You can also adjust the volume in much more detailed ways on the clip using keyframes.

Exporting your video

  • That’s it! Once you have edited the video, it is time to export or save it on your system. This can be done by clicking on the Deliver at the bottom right of the page.

The Deliver page shows you a preview of what will be exported, including your timeline, but you can’t make any changes here. On the left side are the settings for exporting your video. You can use customs settings or a few presets.

5.3 Main Features

You can drag the video or audio effect you like to add.

  • Tools: It has effects of light, material, texture, 3D, Blur, color, composite, deep pixel, filter, and flow. There are around 70 to 80 effects under tools.
  • OpenFX: In OpenFX, you get resolve FX blur, Resolve FX color, Resolve FX generate, Resolve FX stylize, light, texture, and wrap.
  • Templates: Binoculars, colored border, drone overlay, DSLR, night vision, noise gradient, texture background, and many more. It has more than 60 template effects for video editing.
  • LUTs: There is Astrodesign, Blackmagic design, film looks, HDR log gamma, red, sony, and more LUTs. In total, Davinci Resolve 18 has more than 50 LUTs to use.

You can merge the effects, matte control, and set the brightness/contrast. After adding the effect, you can adjust the specific parameters, zoom in/out videos, rotate videos, and other functions of the clip.

Mark Clips

You can mark the clips “in” and “out” points to refine the portion of the video you want to use in the edit. The best part is that you can separately mark the audio and video to create split edits where the video starts before or after the audio.

Edit in Timeline

  • Insert: It allows you to insert a clip into the timeline at the location of the playhead. This will push everything else down to make room for the inserted clip. And, if the playhead is in the middle of a clip, it will split it and place the new clip in the middle.
  • Overwrite: The overwrite edit is something that most video creators use. This will place a new video clip on the timeline at the location of the playhead.
  • Replace: You can replace a clip with another clip of similar length in the timeline.

Automatically Trim and Tighten

The trim feature of DaVinci allows you to adjust the timing between various video clips so you can fine-tune your video editing. Further, its smart trim tool automatically switches between ripple, slide, roll, and slip based on the location of the mouse pointer.

It saves you time going back and forth to go to trimming tools. This actually makes DaVinci Resolve 18 faster to trim or edit the video.

DaVinci Resolve 18 offers the picture in picture effect too. For this, you need to stack two video clips in the timeline and choose one on top. After this, you can use the screen controls to resize and reposition the clip anywhere in the frame.
